Top-ranked Pittsburgh aims to stay unbeaten

Jan 14, 2009 - 11:31 AM South Florida (6-9) at No. 1 Pittsburgh (15-0), 7:00 p.m. EST

PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- After winning its first game as the nation's top team for the first time in school history, Pittsburgh should not have much of a problem making it two in a row.

The top-ranked Panthers host lowly South Florida in a Big East Conference contest on Wednesday.

One of three unbeaten teams left in Division I, Pittsburgh (15-0, 3-0 Big East) is ranked No. 1 for the second straight week after never receiving the ranking in the school's history. Wake Forest (14-0) and Clemson (16-0) are the other unbeatens.

DeJuan Blair had 23 points and 15 rebounds as the Panthers crushed St. John's, 90-67, on Sunday. Freshman Jermaine Dixon added 17 points while leading scorer Sam Young was held to 12.

Pittsburgh should have no trouble with South Florida (6-9, 1-2), which owns the worst record in the Big East.

Dominique Jones is averaging 17 points per game for the Bulls, who are coming off an 80-58 victory at DePaul on Saturday. The sophomore scored 22 points in the win.

Things get tougher after this contest for the Panthers, who visit No. 20 Louisville and host eighth-ranked Syracuse in their next two games.
