Xavier looks to extend winning streak vs. La Salle

Jan 18, 2009 - 6:29 AM La Salle (9-6) at No. 16 Xavier (14-2) 12:00 p.m. EST

CINCINNATI (Ticker) -- Its not always pretty, but No. 16 Xavier has been getting the job done.

The Musketeers will be looking to push their overall winning streak to six games and home winning streak against conference opponents to 18 games when they face La Salle on Sunday.

Xavier (14-2, 3-0 Atlantic 10) squeezed out a 67-65 win at Rhode Island on Thursday.

The Musketeers trailed, 61-60, with 1:45 left when Dante Jackson took a pass from freshman Terrell Holloway and drained a 3-pointer. The Rams missed their next two shots before Holloway hit a pair of free throws to stretch the lead to 65-61 with 31 seconds left.

Once again, Xavier relied on its defense to carry it to victory. The Musketeers allowed Rhode Island to shoot just 37 percent from the floor and limited the school to just 10 free-throw attempts.

Xavier has held 13 of its first 16 opponents to under 40 percent shooting from the field and ranks ninth in the nation with a field goal percentage defense on 36.7 percent.

La Salle (9-6, 1-1) is coming off its first win over Charlotte, 68-61, on Wednesday and has a chance to move above .500 in conference play.

Ruben Guillandeaux scored 14 points to lead five Explorers in double figures against Charlotte.
