Unbeaten Connecticut continues soft slate vs. Texas Southern

Dec 3, 2006 - 3:39 PM Texas Southern (2-5) at No. 15 Connecticut (6-0) 2:00 pm EST

STORRS, Connecticut (Ticker) -- Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun has always preached defense to his teams. This season, his young squad is listening.

The 15th-ranked Huskies look to remain unbeaten when they take on Texas Southern at home on Sunday.

Connecticut has clamped down defensively, allowing just 52.3 points per game with its opponents shooting 32 percent from the field. However, the team has eight freshmen and is still developing offensively, scoring just 78 points per game.

On Wednesday, Craig Austrie and Doug Wiggins scored 12 points each and Jerome Dyson and A.J. Price added 11 apiece to help the Huskies remain undefeated with an 89-46 victory over Sacred Heart. Connecticut recorded its 25th consecutive home victory and 12th straight at Gampel Pavilion, where it is 49-4 against non-conference opponents since 1990.

Part of the Huskies' defensive prowess can be attributed to their competition. Connecticut has racked up wins against lightweights like Quinnipiac (2-4), Central Arkansas (3-5), Fairfield (2-7) and Albany (2-3).

Texas Southern snapped two-game losing streak on Thursday, defeating Paul Quinn, 76-68. Chris Moore collected 27 points and 12 rebounds and Jacques Jones added 23 points for the Tigers, who shot 62 percent in the second half to secure the win.

Last season, the Huskies routed Texas Southern, 113-49, in the lone meeting between the teams.
