Nevada shoots for seventh straight victory
Dec 3, 2006 - 4:10 PM No. 20 Nevada (6-0) at California (6-1) 9:00 pm ESTSAN JOSE, California (Ticker) -- Nevada aims to start 7-0 for the first time since 1951, but to achieve that goal it has to get by California in the 10th annual Pete Newell Challenge.
The victory would give the Wolf Pack their first 7-0 start since the 1951-52 season when they won their first nine.
Nevada, which started last season 6-0, stayed perfect with a 86-74 triumph at Louisiana-Lafayette on Wednesday. Nick Fazekas, the 2005 and 2006 Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, led the Wolf Pack with 21 points while Marcelus Kemp scored 19 points.
The Wolf Pack only turned the ball over six times while forcing 11 Cajun turnovers.
The Golden Bears easily defeated Kansas State, 78-48 on Wednesday for their fifth consecutive victory.
Ayinde Ubaka led Cal with 14 points and eight assists while DeVon Hardin scored 12 points and finished with 12 rebounds.
