NJIT snaps nation's longest losing streak
Jan 22, 2009 - 6:52 AM NEWARK, New Jersey (Ticker) -- New Jersey Institute of Technology finally put an end to its run of futility on Wednesday.Jheryl Wilson scored a career-high 26 points as the Highlanders snapped their 51-game losing streak with a 61-51 victory over Bryant.
Students rushed the court as the Highlanders celebrated their first win in 702 days. NJIT (1-18) had not won since February 19, 2007 when it posted a 78-74 triumph at Longwood.
"You want the definition of a winner?" first-year NJIT coach Jim Engles asked his team after the game, according to the Newark Star Ledger. "You are. You deserve this. Now you know what the feeling is like."
The Highlanders lost their final four games of the 2006-07 campaign and went 0-29 last season before dropping the first 18 contests of this season.
"A friend of mine told me I'm the highest paid coach in the country per win right now," Engles told the newspaper.
NJIT used a 16-2 run to take a 26-12 lead late in the first half, and the Highlanders held a 31-15 advantage at the break.
Bryant, which fell to 3-16, never made a serious threat during the second half.
