Xavier looks to keep rolling through Atlantic 10

Jan 31, 2009 - 11:22 AM Massachusetts (7-11) at No. 10 Xavier (18-2) 12:00 p.m. EST

CINCINNATI (Ticker) -- Xavier will look to remain perfect in Atlantic 10 play when it hosts Massachusetts on Saturday.

The 10th-ranked Musketeers (18-2, 6-0 A-10) have won nine straight games for the second time this season. They opened the season 9-0 before dropping back-to-back games to Duke and Butler, but have reeled off another nine-game winning streak since.

Outside of squeezing out a 67-65 win at Rhode Island on January 15, Xavier has been dominant in conference play. The Musketeers have won five other conference games by an average of 22.8 points.

B.J. Raymond had 23 points and 10 rebounds in a 69-47 win over Charlotte on Wednesday. Xavier, which jumped to a 31-13 halftime lead, limited the 49ers to just 4-of-23 from behind the arc.

The Minutemen (7-11, 2-3) have lost two straight games to fall below .500 in conference play.

UMass lost at Charlotte in overtime, 69-64, blowing an eight-point lead down the stretch last Wednesday. It followed with a 62-54 loss to La Salle last Saturday.

Tony Gaffney, who ranks second in the country with 4.6 blocks per game, recorded his seventh double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds while registering four rejections in the loss.
