Gonzaga goes for its ninth straight win

Feb 5, 2009 - 11:19 AM No. 18 Gonzaga (16-4) at Portland (15-7), 11:00 p.m. EST

After fending off a pair of teams expected to challenge Gonzaga for the West Coast Conference title, the Bulldogs have to face another upstart squad.

Gonzaga looks to extend its winning streak to nine games when it visits Portland on Thursday.

Winners of eight straight regular-season WCC crowns, the 18th-ranked Bulldogs (16-4, 7-0 WCC) seized control of the conference with victories over previously unbeaten Saint Mary's and San Diego last week.

However, Portland (15-7, 6-1) has won six straight and has a chance to tie Gonzaga for the conference lead. Portland is off to its best start in the conference since joining the WCC in 1977.

Nik Raivio scored 27 points as the Pilots defeated Saint Mary's, 84-66, on Saturday. Raivio, who is the younger brother of former Gonzaga guard Derek Raivio, is averaging a team-best 16.5 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.

Josh Heytvelt is scoring 14.4 points per contest to lead the Bulldogs, who won the first meeting this season, 67-50, on January 10. It was Gonzaga's 11th straight victory over Portland.
