Oregon State WBB: Beaver Losing Streak Extends To 9 With 75-73 Loss To ASU

The struggles of the Oregon State Women’s Basketball team continued Thursday night, as the Beavers fell to the Arizona State Sun Devils 75-73 in what should have been a very winnable game. The loss extends the Beaver losing streak to 9, and drops them to 11-17 overall, and 3-14 in the Pac-12. Arizona State improves to 8-18 overall, and picks up its first conference win to move to 1-16 in Pac-12 play.

Oregon State leapt out to an early lead in the first quarter, with strong performances from Jelena Mitrovic and Bendu Yeaney giving the Beavs a six point, 19-13 lead after one. The Beavers extended that lead to 10 by the end of the second quarter, with OSU leaving for the locker rooms up 36-26.

The Sun Devil comeback started in the third. Tyi Skinner dropped 15 points on the Beavers in the third quarter as Arizona State cut the OSU lead in half, with the Beavers up 5 headed into the final 10 minutes. Momentum stayed with the Sun Devils in the fourth, and by the six minute mark they grabbed their first lead since the first quarter.

OSU kept things close, and managed to grab the lead back a couple times, but the Beavers entered the final minute of the game down 4 points. Jelena Mitrovic cut that to three with a free throw, but Tyi Skinner hit a pair of foul shots to put ASU up 5. Noelle Mannen then hit another free throw, but was answered by two from ASU’s Jaddan Simmons. Adlee Blacklock hit a three to cut the Sun Devil lead down, but a pair of free throws put it right back to 5. One last three from Timea Gardiner cut the Beaver deficit to two, but they couldn’t get the ball back before time expired.

Raegan Beers and Adlee Blacklock led the Beavers in scoring, with 14 points each. Timea Gardiner was right behind them with 13 points, and added 8 rebounds. Bendu Yeaney was one rebound shy of a triple double tonight, with 12 points, 13 assists and 9 rebounds.

Oregon State has one last chance to snap their losing streak before the end of the regular season, but it’ll be a tough one. They’ll take on the 14th ranked Arizona Wildcats on Saturday, with tip off set for 12:00 PM PT.
