Wake Forest goes for sweep of slumping Duke

Feb 22, 2009 - 2:06 PM No. 8 Wake Forest (20-4) at No. 9 Duke (21-5), 7:45 p.m. EST

DURHAM, North Carolina (Ticker) -- North Carolina's loss on Saturday means that the Atlantic Coast Conference could still be up for grabs. Wake Forest and Duke are vying to stay in contention.

The eighth-ranked Demon Deacons hope to sweep the season series when they visit the ninth-ranked Blue Devils on Sunday.

Both Wake Forest (20-4, 7-4 ACC) and Duke (21-5, 7-4) are two games back of North Carolina (10-3), which suffered an 88-85 overtime defeat at Maryland on Saturday.

However, the Demon Deacons and Blue Devils have both endured some hardships over the past couple weeks and have not looked like the teams that played to a last-second thriller on January 28.

Wake Forest has lost three straight road games and Duke has dropped four of seven, which includes its 70-68 setback against the Demon Deacons. James Johnson scored the game-winning layup with under one second to play.

Jeff Teague is averaging a team-leading 20 points per game to lead Wake Forest, which is coming off consecutive home wins over Florida State and Georgia Tech. The Demon Deacons beat the Yellow Jackets, 87-69, on Wednesday.

After back-to-back losses, Duke hopes it got back on track with a 76-69 victory over St. John's on Thursday. Gerald Henderson scored 19 points and Jon Scheyer collected 18.

Wake Forest has not swept the season series since the 1995-96 campaign.
