Michigan State inching closer to Big Ten title

Feb 25, 2009 - 11:25 AM Iowa (14-13) at No. 9 Michigan State (21-5) 8:30 p.m. EST

EAST LANSING, Michigan (Ticker) -- Ninth-ranked Michigan State looks to move one step closer to its first Big Ten regular-season title in eight seasons when it hosts Iowa on Wednesday.

The Spartans (21-5, 11-3 Big Ten) own a one-game lead over 16th-ranked Purdue (21-6, 10-4) and are 1 1/2 games in front of No. 20 Illinois (226-, 10-5) for the top spot in the conference with four games to play.

Michigan State's quest for its first Big Ten crown since 2001 hit a roadblock when it dropped a 72-54 decision to Purdue on February 17.

The Spartans were on the verge of suffering two straight losses for the first time this season Sunday when they fell behind 41-29 with 12:31 remaining against Wisconsin.

But, Michigan State rallied, closing the contest on a 32-9 run to escape with a 61-50 victory.

Kalin Lucas scored 17 points and Goran Suton had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Spartans, who should have little trouble against Iowa (14-13, 4-10).

The Hawkeyes avoided their third straight loss and their 10th in 12 games by rallying for a 70-60 overtime victory against Michigan on Sunday.
