Purdue looks to finish strong vs. Northwestern

Mar 4, 2009 - 11:16 AM Northwestern (16-11) at No. 20 Purdue (22-7) 6:30 p.m. EST

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana (Ticker) -- With its hopes of a Big Ten regular-season title dashed, Purdue will turn its attention to finishing strong.

The Boilermakers will be looking to post their fifth win in the last six games when they face Northwestern on Wednesday.

Purdue (22-7, 11-5 Big Ten) was eliminated from title contention on Tuesday when Michigan State knocked off Indiana to claim its first outright title since 1999.

The last time the Boilermakers faced the Wildcats (16-11, 7-9), on January 15, it took some second-half heroics to scrape out a 63-61 win.

JaJuan Johnson knocked down a pair of free throws with 2.2 seconds left as Purdue erased a 14-point deficit. Northwestern missed seven free throws and managed only two field goals over the final 7:56.

The Wildcats enter Wednesday's contest with consecutive wins over conference bottom-feeders Indiana and Iowa.

Kevin Coble scored 16 points in Saturday's 55-49 win over Iowa and leads the team at 15.3 per game.
