Gonzaga faces St. Mary's in WCC final

Mar 9, 2009 - 5:10 PM St. Mary's (25-5) at No. 12 Gonzaga (25-5), 9:00 pm EDT

LAS VEGAS (Ticker) -- Gonzaga will make its 12th consecutive trip to the West Coast Conference tournament finals, meeting St. Mary's on Sunday.

The 12th-ranked Bulldogs, who won both their regular-season matchups with the Gaels, cruised to their eighth straight win with Sunday's 94-59 victory over Santa Clara.

Austin Daye scored 28 points in the conference semifinals to help Gonzaga overcome a poor performance from its leading scorer. Josh Heytvelt, who averages 15.7 points this season, finished with three points on 1-of-7 shooting.

The Bulldogs has not lost to a WCC opponent since last season's championship game, a 69-62 setback to San Diego on March 10, 2008.

St. Mary's received a boost from Patty Mills, who missed five weeks with a broken hand, during Sunday's 71-61 triumph over Portland in the conference semifinals. Mills finished with 12 points and Diamon Simpson added 15 with 14 rebounds.
