Surging Pittsburgh sets sights on No. 1 seed

Mar 12, 2009 - 12:40 PM West Virginia (22-10) at No. 2 Pittsburgh (28-3) 7:00 p.m. EDT

PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- Second-ranked Pittsburgh will be looking to lock up a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament when it takes on West Virginia in the quarterfinals of the Big East tournament on Thursday.

The Panthers (28-3, 15-3 Big East) are coming off a win over No. 4 Connecticut and have always performed well in the conference tournament, reaching the final game in seven of the last eight seasons.

Led by Big East co-Player of the Year DeJuan Blair, Pittsburgh is hoping a top seed in the NCAA Tournament could help them reach their first Final Four since 1941. The Panthers have not reached a regional final since 1974.

Blair, who is averaging 15.6 points and 12.4 rebounds, and Sam Young, who leads the team in scoring at 18.8 points, are looking to reverse that with their potent inside-outside combination.

The Mountaineers (22-10, 11-8) earned a spot in the quarterfinals with a 74-62 victory over Notre Dame on Wednesday. Alex Ruoff scored 25 points and Da'Sean Butler added 20 for West Virginia, which knocked down 11-of-20 3-point attempts.

Pittsburgh won both meetings during the regular season, with Young averaging 21 points.
