San Diego State vs. College of Charleston

Leg 1 – Charleston under 60.5 total points (+285)

Charleston had a very impressive season, but this is about the worst draw that they could have hoped for. They haven’t faced a team this season with the defensive prowess of San Diego State, who ranks 10th overall in Kenpom’s defensive efficiency and falls within the top 100 of almost every statistical defensive category. The Cougars love to shoot the 3, putting up about 30 of them per game and connecting on 10+ on average, which is a major concern against this Aztecs team that ranks 9th in the country in 3PT% allowed. I don’t see how Charleston puts up points in this matchup, and their team total several points too high in my opinion, so I will roll the dice on the Aztecs keeping them below this alternate total.

Leg 2 – San Diego State -2.5 (-175)

While I do expect the Aztecs to win this game, I expect both sides to struggle offensively, especially with San Diego State being forced to travel cross-country to play this mid-afternoon game in Orlando. I expect for their pace of play (257th) to trump that of Charleston and dictate this game, leading to a low-possession game and limiting the possibility to win with margin. The price of the moneyline was too steep for my liking, so I adjusted the spread to bring this down to a one-possession win for the Aztecs. Charleston has had an excellent year, but I expect it to come to an end here at the hands of the class of the Mountain West. Look elsewhere for your 12 over 5 upset, as the Aztecs will win a close game to advance to the round of 32.
