No. 22 Maryland opens conference play vs. Boston College

Dec 10, 2006 - 4:00 PM No. 22 Maryland (9-1) at Boston College (5-2) 6:30 pm EST

CHESTNUT HILL, Massachusetts (Ticker) -- Maryland coach Gary Williams could be forgiven for pausing to reflect in familiar surroundings.

Williams returns to one of his former coaching homes Sunday as the 22nd-ranked Terrapins open their Atlantic Coast Conference schedule at Boston College.

Coaching his 18th season at Maryland, Williams goes back Boston College for the first time with the Terrapins. He guided the Eagles to a 76-45 record and two trips to the NCAA Tournament from 1982-1986 before moving on to Ohio State.

Off to its best 10-game start since the 1998-1999 campaign, Maryland has five players averaging in double figures in points, led by senior D.J. Strawberry (15.2), who was named the Most Valuable Player of last month's 2K Sports College Hoops Classic Championship.

Mike Jones scored 18 points and Strawberry and Greivis Vasquez added 16 each for the Terrapins, who rebounded from last Sunday's loss to Notre Dame with Wednesday's 79-59 victory over Fordham.

Boston College has faced New England-area opponents in its first seven contests and has won four straight after consecutive defeats to Vermont and Providence.

Jared Dudley scored 20 points, Sean Williams had 16 and Sean Marshall 14 for the Eagles, who shot 52 percent (28-of-54) from the floor in Wednesday's 75-52 win over Fairfield.

Maryland has won four of the six previous encounters against Boston College and is making its first-ever trip here.
