Michigan State escapes, advances

Mar 21, 2011 - 2:06 AM Wichita, KS (Sports Network) - Kalisha Keane netted 17 points as fourth- seeded Michigan State knocked off 13th-seeded Northern Iowa by a narrow 69-66 margin in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Taylor Alton registered 14 points for Michigan State (27-5), which advances to face fifth-seeded Green Bay in round two.

Jacqui Kalin scored 21 points in the lopsided loss for Northern Iowa (27-6), which had a 19-game winning streak snapped.

Michigan State led 37-28 at intermission.

The Spartans were held scoreless over the final 1:53 of the contest. The Panthers had a chance to force overtime, but Erin Brocka missed a three- pointer in the closing seconds.
