Michigan State hammers Hampton

Mar 23, 2014 - 8:09 PM Chapel Hill, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Aerial Powers registered a double-double with 26 points and a massive 18 rebounds as the Michigan State Spartans crushed the Hampton Lady Pirates, 91-61, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament's Stanford Regional at Carmichael Arena.

Annalise Pickrel produced 21 points for the fifth-seeded Spartans (23-9), shooting a perfect 7-of-7 from the floor and 4-of-4 at the free-throw line, followed by Becca Mills and Tori Jankoska with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Off the bench, Branndais Agee accounted for 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The 12th-seeded Lady Pirates (28-5) were paced by Nicole Hamilton with 19 points, eight rebounds and four steals, but she shot only 7-of-26 from the floor. Alyssa Bennett produced another 16 points and seven boards in the loss.

Hampton made a total of just seven field goals in the first half, falling behind at the break by a margin of 54-22 and never had a chance to recover in the 30-point setback.

Michigan State, which will take on the winner of the Tennessee Martin/North Carolina meeting in the second round on Tuesday, suffered 20 turnovers on the day, but made up for them by limiting Hampton to just 27.2 percent shooting from the field and 2-of-18 beyond the arc.
