Lady Vols pull away to earn Sweet 16 berth

Mar 25, 2014 - 3:42 AM Knoxville, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Cierra Burdick and Isabelle Harrison each had double-doubles as the Tennessee Lady Volunteers defeated the St. John's Red Storm 67-51 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Thompson-Boling Arena.

Burdick had 21 points and 11 rebounds and Harrison tacked on 10 points and 11 boards for top-seed Tennessee (29-5), which will await the winner of Tuesday's matchup between Texas and Maryland in the Sweet 16. Meighan Simmons tallied 17 points as well.

Aliyyah Handford netted a game-high 23 points for eighth-seed St. John's (23-11).

The Red Storm hung with the Lady Vols early, entering halftime trailing by only four points (39-35). St. John's hit on 46.7 percent (14-of-30) from the floor in the frame, while Tennessee converted 55.6 percent (15-of-27).

In the second half both teams struggled to find the basket. Tennessee hit on just 34.6 percent from the floor, but it was enough to extend the lead over St. John's, which managed only five field goals in the final 20 minutes.

Tennessee had a 19-11 scoring edge off of turnovers and a 36-22 advantage on points in the paint. The Lady Vols never trailed in the contest.
