Texas A&M tops James Madison to advance

Mar 26, 2014 - 5:03 AM College Station, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Courtney Williams netted 23 points and grabbed six rebounds as the third-seeded Texas A&M Aggies defeated the 11th-seeded James Madison Dukes, 85-69, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Reed Arena.

Karla Gilbert tallied a double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds for Texas A&M (26-8), which moves on to the Sweet 16 to face seventh-seeded DePaul on Saturday. Courtney Walker chipped in 18 points and seven boards, and Jordan Jones led the team with 16 assists in the win.

Kirby Burkholder notched a double-double to pace James Madison (29-6) with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Precious Hall and Jazmon Gwathmey each contributed 14 points for the Dukes, and Toia Giggetts added 12 points in the loss.

Texas A&M was rolling in the first half, as the Aggies connected on 52 percent of their field goal attempts in the frame. The Aggies also hit 19-of-26 from the free-throw line to help the team take a 47-43 lead at the midway break. James Madison buried 45.2 percent of its shot tries in the half.

The Aggies made 48.5 percent of their shot attempts in the second half, while the Dukes' shooting touch went south. JMU netted 29.4 percent of its tries from the floor in the period, and missed all eight 3-point attempts.

Texas A&M held the advantage in points in the paint, 36-28, and in rebounding, 42-36. James Madison owned a 10-6 edge in points off turnovers.
