Longhorns edge Lady Toppers to advance

Mar 21, 2015 - 1:58 AM Berkeley, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Brooke McCarty connected on a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left to lift her fifth-seeded Texas Longhorns over the 12th-seeded Western Kentucky Lady Toppers, 66-64, in the first round of the NCAA Women's Tournament at Haas Pavilion Friday.

McCarty finished with 10 points off the bench for Texas (23-10), while Imani McGee-Stafford tallied a double-double of 24 points and 15 rebounds to lead the way for the Longhorns. Brady Sanders added nine points, five assists and five rebounds in the win.

Texas moves on to face the California Golden Bears in the second round of the tournament Sunday.

Chastity Gooch scored 25 points and pulled down six rebounds, and Alexis Govan chimed in with 20 points for Western Kentucky (30-5). Kendall Noble grabbed 10 rebounds to pace the Toppers on the boards.

Texas owned a 48-16 advantage in scoring in the paint, but shot just 1-of-13 from 3-point range in the win. The Longhorns never owned a lead larger than five points throughout the contest.
