Buckeyes win shootout over JMU to advance

Mar 21, 2015 - 8:34 PM Chapel Hill, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Ameryst Alston scored 28 points and dished out eight assists, as the fifth-seeded Ohio State Buckeyes knocked off No. 12 seed James Madison, 90-80, in the first round of the NCAA Women's Tournament at Carmichael Arena.

Big Ten co-player of the year Kelsey Mitchell and Alexa Hart also eclipsed 20 points for OSU (24-10) with 23 and 20 points, respectively. Hart dominated the paint, as she also added a game-high 13 points and seven blocks. Shayla Cooper chipped in with 11 points and seven boards off the bench for the Buckeyes, who move on to play at No. 4 seed North Carolina in the second round of the Greensboro region Monday night in Chapel Hill.

The Dukes (29-4) saw their six-game win streak come to a halt, although they did hang around thanks to 10 3-pointers. Precious Hall shared game-high honors with 28 points, while Ashley Perez had 20 points and seven caroms off the bench.

It was a 67-63 game with 8 1/2 minutes to play in regulation, but JMU was simply unable to keep pace. OSU shot 58 percent from the field in the second stanza and scored on seven straight trips down the court in the final minutes to seal the outcome.

The Buckeyes notched their first NCAA Tournament victory since 2011.
