UNC advances past Buckeyes on buzzer beater

Mar 24, 2015 - 12:59 AM Chapel Hill, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Jamie Cherry knocked down a jumper as time expired to lift the fourth-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels to an 86-84 win over the fifth-seeded Ohio State Buckeyes in the second round of the NCAA Women's Tournament at Carmichael Arena.

Stephanie Mavunga spearheaded the charge for the Tar Heels (26-8) with 27 points and 14 rebounds, while Allisha Gray tallied 20 points, seven boards and five assists. Brittany Rountree provided 15 points and Cherry finished with seven points on 2-of-6 shooting from the field. North Carolina will advance to play top-seeded South Carolina in the Sweet 16.

Ameryst Alston led the way for the Buckeyes (24-11) with 30 points on 11-of-22 efficiency from the field. Kelsey Mitchell contributed 25 points and six assists, while Alexa Hart registered a double-double with 15 points and 10 boards.

The Tar Heels dominated the opening period en route to a 50-32 halftime lead. OSU went on a 30-13 run in the second half to even the score at 84 with five seconds remaining.

UNC finished with a 45-34 advantage in total rebounds.
