Dayton upsets Louisville to advance to Elite Eight
Mar 28, 2015 - 8:46 PM Albany, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrea Hoover netted 26 points and added five rebounds, five assists and a perfect 15-of-15 performance from the free-throw line to lead her seventh-seeded Dayton Flyers past the third-seeded Louisville Cardinals, 82-66, in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Women's Tournament at the Times Union Center.Dayton (27-6) was appearing in its first-ever Sweet 16, and will move on to the Elite Eight to set another program first Monday. The Flyers will clash with top-seeded Connecticut in Albany.
Amber Deane chipped in with 15 points to help the Flyers, while Jodie Cornelie tallied a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, adding in four blocked shots. Kelley Austria contributed another 10 points in the win for the Flyers, who are now 111-10 since the 2009-10 season when the team scores 70 or more points.
Myisha Hines-Allen led the charge for Louisville (27-6) with 14 points in the loss. Bria Smith came off the bench to collect 12 points, and Shawnta' Dyer notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Jude Schimmel leveled off the double-digit scoring for the Cards, connecting on a miserable 4-of-23 shooting for 11 points.
Dayton took a slim 30-29 lead into the intermission after the Flyers limited the Cardinals to 31.3 percent shooting in the opening frame, which included an 0-of-6 mark from 3-point distance. Dayton buried 48 percent of its tries from the floor in the half, but made just 1-of-8 from beyond the arc.
The Flyers improved to 53.6 percent shooting in the second period, while Louisville stayed consistent with a 31.7 shooting percentage. Dayton converted 21-of-25 attempts from the free-throw line, while the Cards made 10-of-11 at the charity stripe to give the Flyers a hefty advantage as their lead grew to as many as 16 points with 18 seconds to play.
Dayton held a 42-34 advantage in points in the paint, and was able to outscore Louisville from the free-throw line, 26-19, in the victory.
