Weisner leads No. 8 Oregon State women past Colorado, 73-50

Feb 13, 2016 - 7:13 AM CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) Oregon State coach Scott Rueck praised his team's passing, spacing and overall flow on offensive. He was particularly pleased with the 21 assists.

''I thought the ball control and the way we moved the ball tonight really was historic for us,'' Rueck said after the eighth-ranked Beavers beat Colorado 73-50 Friday night for their 11th straight victory.

Jamie Weisner scored 16 points, Sydney Wiese had 15 points and eight assists, and Deven hunter added 11 points and seven rebounds for Oregon State (21-3, 12-1 Pac-12).

Wiese liked how the Beavers ran in transition.

''I think the wings got out really well,'' she said. "It was a lot of fun just to flow into our offense a lot better. We really didn't have to stop and set things up.''

Kennedy Leonard had 11 points, Haley Smith added 10 points and eight rebounds, and Jamee Swan also scored 10 for the Buffaloes (6-18, 1-12).

''They're a veteran group and we're a young group and that's kind of what that looks like,'' Colorado coach Linda Lappe said.

Oregon State shot 45 percent, compared to 33 percent for Colorado, and the Buffaloes made only 27 percent of their attempts in the second half.

''Defensively, in the second half, we came out with a lot more energy and we had more of a sense of urgency trying to make them more uncomfortable,'' Wiese said.

The Beavers also outrebounded the Buffaloes 46-37.

Oregon State led 20-16 at the end of the first quarter. Colorado kept the game tight until an 8-0 Beavers run, capped by Wiese's layup that put them ahead 33-23 with 3:10 left in the half. The Buffaloes were held scoreless for nearly four minutes during that stretch.

Oregon State led 37-28 at the break.

Six straight points by Wiese - on a three-point play and a 3-pointer on the next possession - put Oregon State up 47-34 with 7:03 remaining in the third quarter. The Beavers entered the fourth leading 56-42.

They pushed the lead to 27 in the fourth quarter.

Colorado: The Buffaloes dropped to 0-10 on the road this season. ... Colorado has the 14th most difficult schedule in the nation when looking at opponents' combined winning percentage of 62.1 percent entering Friday.

Oregon State: The Beavers wore pink uniforms for an annual cancer benefit game, and those will be auctioned off on Sunday. C Ruth Hamblin also got a haircut after Friday's game and donated her locks to make wigs for cancer patients. ... Hamblin had seven points, six rebounds and four blocks. ... Weisner was named to the Naismith Trophy Midseason 30 list on Wednesday. ... The program's longest winning streak is 14 games, set in 1982-83, when the Beavers went to the Sweet 16.

Wiese said that Oregon State isn't getting complacent due to the win streak.

''I think we've been doing a really good job of taking it game by game, even practice by practice,'' she said. ''I know that we put in a lot of hard work every day,''

REBOUNDS

Colorado held an 11-6 advantage on the boards at the end of the first quarter, but that didn't last long against Oregon State, which leads the nation in defensive rebounds per game at 32.

''Rebounding is a big part of who we are,'' Rueck said. ''The position defense that we play, for the most part, provides us with position where we should be dominant.''
