Brunner beats buzzer in OT, No. 9 Arizona St beats Stanford
Feb 15, 2016 - 5:44 AM STANFORD, Calif. (AP) Sophie Brunner had to learn the fadeaway jumper the hard way. The 6-foot-1 junior forward usually finds herself competing against taller players.Brunner hit two fadeaways in the final 36 seconds of overtime, including one at the buzzer, to give No. 9 Arizona State a 63-61 victory over No. 13 Stanford on Sunday night.
Brunner had 14 points and 12 rebounds, scoring the final four points of the game to help the Sun Devils (22-4, 13-1 Pac-12) beat the Cardinal for the fourth straight time in regular-season play.
''It's not a game shot I practice a lot,'' Brunner said. ''Sometimes I'll mess around with it during the pregame shooting.''
Sun Devils coach Charli Turner Thorne is glad Brunner can make that shot.
''She has a hook shot. She has all the textbook post shots,'' Turner Thorne said. ''But that's her go-to shot. She's 6-1 on her best day and is always the shortest player in there.''
Katie Hempen scored 12 points for Arizona State, which won for the 19th time in 20 games.
''It was a hugely courageous effort,'' Turner Thorne said. ''We won the rebounding battle and that's huge for us. We're usually undersized in every game but we outrebound everybody.''
Erica McCall scored 22 points and Karlie Samuelson had 14 for the Cardinal (20-6, 10-4).
McCall gave Stanford a 61-59 edge with 1:05 to play in the overtime but Brunner, who also made a key steal during the extra period, tied it on the other end.
''I'm proud of the fight and how we battled back, especially in the fourth quarter,'' Cardinal coach Tara VanDerveer said. ''We needed to execute a little better at the end. Unfortunately we dug ourselves a hole.''
The Cardinal went on a 13-2 run to open the final period and Bri Roberson hit two 3-pointers to pull Stanford to 53-52 with 1:32 remaining in regulation.
Lili Thompson had a steal with under a minute left but, following a timeout, Kelsey Moos stole the inbound pass, which led to Elisha Lili Davis making one of two foul shots.
Samuelson hit a 3-pointer with 25 seconds remaining in regulation to give Stanford its first lead of the game at 55-54.
Brunner missed a short jumper on the other end but grabbed her own rebound and was fouled. She made one of two free throws to tie it and Stanford missed a pair of short jumpers, forcing overtime.
The Sun Devils opened a 17-point edge in the first minute of the third quarter and took a 49-36 lead into the fourth.
Stanford was 3 for 13 from the field in the second quarter and was held to six points, as many as it scored in the second quarter of the game in Tempe, in which the Cardinal scored a program-worst 31 points.
Arizona State connected on three of its final four 3s of the first half and opened a 38-25 halftime advantage.

Arizona State: Senior G Elisha Lili Davis developed a circular motion she uses as a distraction when the opposing team takes the ball out of bounds. Davis said she picked it up playing on her AAU club team. ''I didn't see any reason to jump up and down all the time so I used two hands, like `wax on, wax off,''' she said. ''But I got even lazier so I just use one hand. If it works once every 10 or 15 times, it's worth it.''
Stanford: Junior F Kailee Johnson has started 12 games this year, doubling her first two years combined. She's also averaging 19.6 minutes after averaging less than nine previously. Her defense keeps her in the rotation. She's already blocked a career high 14 shots and has 16 steals, surpassing her total of the previous two years. Her 21 assists are also a career best.
