No. 6 Maryland women beat Rutgers 73-59

Feb 21, 2016 - 11:19 PM PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) With only a few weeks until the postseason, Maryland came in to Piscataway looking to hit its stride. The Terrapins left with a convincing win in what coach Brenda Frese called one of Maryland's most complete games of the season.

Shatori Walker-Kimbrough scored 22 points and Brionna Jones added 14 points and 11 rebounds to help the sixth-ranked Terrapins beat Rutgers 73-59 on Sunday.

''I really liked how we were clicking on all cylinders,'' Frese said, adding, ''Really important and really great to see a step forward and to get a road win is always a tough thing.''

Trailing 14-13 after the first quarter, Maryland took control of the game hitting 3-pointers. The Terrapins made three straight 3s to start the second quarter.

''Our press kind of really slowed them down (in the second quarter),'' Frese said. ''It was really great to see how we executed and the energy we had and I thought we did a really good job communicating, especially in the zone and I thought (Tyler) Sciafe and (Kahleah) Copper are two great players, but I thought we did a great job of really kind of knowing where they're at and making it difficult.''

Brene Moseley hit a 3-pointer and then assisted on another one to help the Terrapins outscore the Scarlet Knights 20-8 in the second quarter to take a 34-21 lead in to the half.

''We had some bad turnovers. We started rushing the shots,'' Sciafe said. ''I know myself, I started not letting it flow as much and shooting a little to quickly and they started capitalizing off of us missing, whether it be going to the post or fast break points and I think that's where they kind of took off.''

Walker-Kimbrough's layup with 2:04 left in the half gave Maryland its first double-digit lead of the game. Victoria Harris cut in to Maryland's lead after hitting a pair of free throws for Rutgers to make it 30-21.

It was the last time Rutgers would trail by less than 10 points.

Kiah Gillespie hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the third quarter off a pass from Moseley to give Maryland a 56-38 lead. The Terps would lead by as many as 22 points after Walker-Kimbrough hit a 3-pointer to make it 63-41 with 6:39 left in the game.

''Just wanted to come out more aggressive, not just offensively but also defensively,'' Walker-Kimbrough said. ''I think that's where I lacked last game, but just being able to give the energy my team needs wherever that energy needs to be at, whether it's defense, rebounding, or getting people open shots or scoring it myself, but being able to get that energy and coming out aggressive.''

Copper had 23 points and Sciafe added 11 points for the Scarlet Knights (16-12, 7-9).

TIP-INS

Maryland: Moseley had five assists to surpass 400 in her career. ... The Terrapins reserves outscored Rutgers 24-2.

Rutgers: The Scarlet Knights have lost 40 of their last 41 games against Top 10. The last victory came February 5, 2008 when they defeated UConn at home.

THE 100 CLUB:

After hitting three 3-pointers on Sunday, Walker-Kimbrough has 100 in her career. ... Jones and Walker-Kimbrough have now played in 100 straight games.
