No. 7 Oregon St tops Cal State Bakersfield 75-51

Dec 15, 2015 - 11:06 PM CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) Oregon State center Ruth Hamblin says this year's team has stars and depth.

Hamblin had 12 points, eight rebounds and two blocks as the No. 7 Beavers cruised past Cal State Bakersfield 75-51 on Tuesday.

Jamie Weisner added 14 points and Deven Hunter had 11 points for the winners (8-0), who had every player score.

''It's just awesome to be able to have all five people on the floor as a threat to keep the defense on their heels,'' the 6-foot-6 Hamblin said. ''We can just be really deep and cycle through so we never get tired.''

Batabe Zempare had 14 points and eight rebounds, while Dajy Vines added 12 points for the Roadrunners (1-10).

Oregon State outrebounded Cal State Bakersfield 45-32. The Roadrunners were held to just 28 percent shooting, compared to 52 percent for the Beavers.

''We were just missing open looks,'' said Cal State Bakersfield coach Greg McCall. ''They did a good job taking care of the paint, and we knew they were going to clog that up.''

The Beavers went on a 7-0 run in the first quarter, capped by a steal and layup by Sydney Wiese with 1:50 left to put Oregon State up 15-6.

Oregon State went on a 14-2 run to open the second quarter and led 29-12 at the 5:36 mark.

During the first and second quarters, Cal State Bakersfield went more than 11 minutes without a field goal until Zempare made a jumper with 4:35 left in the half.

Oregon State led 37-22 at the break.

The Beavers hit their first eight shots in the second half to move ahead 57-28 with 4:52 left.

Oregon State, which made 10 of 25 3-pointers in the game, led by as many as 30 in the fourth quarter.

Cal State Bakersfield: Zempare has a chance to become the first women's player at Cal State Bakersfield to reach 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. The senior forward had 927 rebounds and 796 points entering the game. . The Roadrunners have an ambitious non-conference schedule that includes four ranked Pac-12 opponents and No. 2 South Carolina.

Oregon State: Gill Coliseum was packed with middle and elementary school students for the annual Beavers Beyond the Classroom game. The afternoon crowd of 7,824 was the third-largest for the program.

LONG-RANGE WOES

Cal State Bakersfield missed all 11 shots from beyond the arc. ''It's very unusual for us to go 0 for 11 from the 3-point line,'' McCall said. ''I told our girls we had to hit seven, eight threes in order for us to be in this game.''

FREE THROWS

Oregon State made just 1 of 2 free throws in the game, while Cal State Bakersfield went 17 of 20 from the line. ''To have a discrepancy that's that lopsided against us, that's very strange,'' Oregon State coach Scott Rueck said.

REMATCH: The Beavers are 32-3 in their last 35 games at Gill Coliseum. That streak will be tested when No. 14 Tennessee comes to Corvallis on Saturday. Last year, then-No. 10 Oregon State lost on the road 74-63 to the No. 6 Volunteers. ''I'm pretty sure Gill is going to be rocking,'' Weisner said.
