Zellous helps Pittsburgh edge Liberty

Dec 20, 2006 - 10:20 PM CANCUN, Mexico (Ticker) -- Shavonte Zellous and Pittsburgh almost did not overcome the distraction of its locality.

Zellous scored 23 points and Marcedes Walker added 13 as the No. 22 Panthers shook off a listless first half to post a 54-47 victory over Liberty in their second game of the Caribbean Classic.

Zellous, who had 22 points in a 70-53 win over East Carolina in the opening game of the tournament on Tuesday, shot just 8-of-20 from the field but grabbed seven rebounds and handed out four assists.

Pittsburgh (12-0) managed to continue its undefeated start despite shooting 38 percent (21-of-56) from the floor. It closes up the event against fourth-ranked Duke on Thursday.

The Panthers' third-leading scorer, Xenia Stewart struggled mightily from the field, making just 1-of-10 attempts, but handed out seven assists.

Megan Frazee scored 16 points and pulled down six rebounds for the Lady Flames (6-5), who had a 26-24 lead at intermission before shooting just 32 percent (6-of-19) in the second half.

It was the fifth loss in the last six games for Liberty.
