Defense keys St. John's victory over Notre Dame
Mar 4, 2008 - 2:39 AM JAMAICA, New York (Ticker) -- Kia Wright scored 14 points as St. John's turned in a strong defensive performance to defeat No. 14 Notre Dame, 61-51, in the Big East Conference season finale for both teams on Monday.The Red Storm (16-13, 7-9 Big East) held the Fighting Irish to just 16 percent shooting (5-of-31) in the first half en route to a 25-15 lead at the break.
Notre Dame (23-7, 11-5) trailed by as many as 14 in the second half and never really threatened St. John's, cutting the lead to only nine with 1:28 to play.
Ashley Barlow had 18 points and 11 rebounds to pace the Irish, who committed 17 turnovers and finished 18-of-71 (25 percent) from the field.
