UConn holds off Louisville, wins Big East title

Mar 12, 2008 - 1:58 AM HARTFORD, Connecticut (Ticker) -- Renee Montgomery scored 20 points as top-ranked Connecticut held off Louisville, 65-59, to win the Big East Conference tournament championship.

Charde Houston added 13 points and 11 rebounds and freshman Maya Moore had 13 and three blocks as the Huskies (32-1) earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Montgomery had an awful shooting night, connecting on just 4-of-19 shots, but she made all 11 attempts at the free-throw line.

UConn held a commanding 34-19 lead at halftime and led by 16 with 14 minutes to play before No. 7 seed Louisville came charging back.

The Cardinals got within 48-47 on a basket by Angel McCoughtry, but could never take the lead.

McCoughtry had 22 points and 11 rebounds and Candyce Bingham 11 and 14 for Louisville (24-9).
