Appel leads Stanford into "Elite Eight"

Mar 30, 2008 - 6:23 AM SPOKANE, Washington (Ticker) -- Jayne Appel scored 22 points to lead second-seeded Stanford to a 72-53 victory over No. 6 Pittsburgh in the Spokane Regional semifinals of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.

The Cardinal, who have won 21 straight, will face No. 1 seed Maryland in the "Elite Eight" on Monday.

Stanford (33-3) managed to win despite a sub-par game from Candace Wiggins, who scored 44 points in a second-round win over Texas El-Paso on Monday. In this one, Wiggins scored just 14 points on 5-of-13 shooting.

Kayla Pedersen had 10 points and 15 rebounds for the Cardinal, which outrebounded the Panthers, 48-25.

Shavonte Zellous scored 22 points for Pittsburgh (24-11), which was playing in its first regional semifinal.
