UConn routs ODU to reach regional final

Mar 30, 2008 - 8:26 PM GREENSBORO, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Big East Conference Player of the Year Maya Moore helped carry top seed Connecticut to its 14th trip to the "Elite Eight", scoring 25 points Sunday in the Huskies' 78-63 victory over No. 5 Old Dominion.

Moore also grabbed 11 rebounds for the Huskies (35-1), who advanced to the final of the Greensboro Regional, where they will face either No. 2 seed Rutgers on Monday.

Rutgers handed Connecticut its only loss of the season, 73-71, on February 5. The Scarlet Knights reached the reginal final with a 53-42 win over No. 6 seed George Washington later Sunday.

While the Huskies are seeking their sixth national championship under coach Geno Auriemma, they have not been to the Final Four since 2004, when they captured their last title.

Old Dominion (31-5) stayed close for most of the first half before Connecticut grabbed a 43-33 halftime lead. The Huskies wore down the Lady Monarchs in the second half, building their advantage to as many as 26 points.

Tiffany Green scored 15 points for ODU, which was making its first "Sweet 16" appearance since 2002. The Lady Monarchs won an NCAA record 17th consecutive Colonial Athletic Association title.

Renee Montgomery chipped in with 13 points for the Huskies, who have won 14 straight since their defeat at Rutgers.

Moore, who is just a freshman, registered her second straight double-double in the tournament. She had 24 points and 12 rebounds in the Huskies' 89-55 second-round victory over Texas.
