Pittsburgh pulls away from East Carolina

Dec 20, 2006 - 2:38 AM CANCUN, Mexico (Ticker) -- Pittsburgh tightened up its defense to remain undefeated.

Shavonte Zellous scored 22 points and Xenia Stewart added 21 as No. 22 Pittsburgh pulled away in the second half for a 70-53 victory over East Carolina at the Caribbean Classic.

The Panthers (11-0) limited the Pirates to six baskets and 21 percent shooting (6-of-29) after halftime to finally break the game open.

Leading 60-51 with just under six minutes to play, Pittsburgh went on a 10-0 run to swell the advantage to 19 points with 3:27 left.

Center Marcedes Walker had 15 points and 15 rebounds - her third double-double of the season - to help the Panthers dominated the backboards, 44-34.

Jessica Slack scored 17 points and Cherie Mills added 12 for East Carolina (4-7), which converted just 13-of-25 free throw attempts.
