Thomas, Vanderbilt roll to Holiday Classic title

Dec 22, 2006 - 12:16 AM NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Carla Thomas helped Vanderbilt continue its offensive roll.

Thomas scored 22 points to lead five players in double figures as the 12th-ranked Commodores captured the Holiday Classic championship with an 89-75 victory over Indiana State.

Vanderbilt (11-1) reached the final of its own event with a 109-40 rout of Lipscomb on Wednesday, recording the team's third-largest margin of victory in school history.

The Commodores kept the sizzling shooting going against the Sycamores (7-4), finishing 53 percent (35-of-66) from the field as they scored at least 85 points for the fourth time this season.

Thomas shot 11-of-20 from the floor, grabbed five rebounds and blocked three shots en route to being named the tournament's MVP.

Christina Wirth scored 18 points and Caroline Williams, Lauren Lueders and Liz Sherwood added 12 each for Vanderbilt.

Rachel Maenpaa scored 23 points and Kelsey Luna chipped in 19 for Indiana State (7-4), which saw Vanderbilt go on an 19-8 run midway through the second half.
