Hampton helps California avert upset
Feb 1, 2007 - 7:44 AM BERKELEY, California (Ticker) -- Devanei Hampton scored 14 points to lead a balanced scoring attack as No. 21 California outlasted UC Riverside, 58-51, in a non-conference game.The Lady Bears (17-5) matched the best start in school history - set in 1984-85 - with their 24th consecutive non-league home win.
Ashley Walker and Natasha Vital added 13 points apiece for California, which got all but two of its points from its starters.
The Bears had a 35-30 edge on the glass as Walker pulled down 10 rebounds and Hampton had eight.
Amber Cox hit three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points for Cal-Riverside (12-9), which pulled within 52-50 with 4 1/2 minutes to play but scored just one point the rest of the way.
