Smith scores 30 in No. 10 Texas A&M rout
Dec 3, 2009 - 3:35 AM COLLEGE STATION, Texas(AP) -- Tanisha Smith took a look at the Stephen F. Austin lineup and knew she was going to have a big night."Knowing I was going up against smaller players, I just penetrated every time," said Smith, who is 6-feet tall. "I can shoot the 3-pointer, but I didn't tonight because the players were smaller."
Smith scored 30 points, the third-highest total in program history, and No. 10 Texas A&M cruised past Stephen F. Austin 106-56 on Wednesday night.
"She was solid," coach Gary Blair said.
Smith added: "I didn't know that I had that many points. I was just taking what the defense was giving me. It was thanks to (Blair's) offense."
Tyra White added 17 points and Sydney Carter had 16 as the Aggies (4-0) shot 58 percent from the field (42 for 73) and limited the LadyJacks to 27 percent (18 for 66).
A&M also had 16 steals, including four by Carter and three each by Smith and Adaora Elonu. Elonu also had 10 rebounds as the Aggies had the rebounding edge, 50-37.
"I thought their defense took us out of what we wanted to do," Stephen F. Austin coach Lee Ann Riley said. "The game got away from us. A&M is a smart team. If you stick with one thing they're going to figure it out and exploit it."
Tammara Marion led Stephen F. Austin (3-2) with 13 points.
The Aggies, winners of 60 of their last 65 home games, led 57-29 at halftime. A&M reached the 100-point mark with 4:37 remaining.
Tammara Marion led the LadyJacks with 13 points. The teams also combined for 57 turnovers (33 by Stephen F. Austin, 24 by A&M) in the oft-sloppy contest.
