Vanderbilt overcomes sluggish start, beats Delaware State

Mar 18, 2007 - 9:23 PM EAST LANSING, Michigan (Ticker) -- Christina Wirth scored 17 points as second-seeded Vanderbilt overcame a sluggish start and defeated 15th-seeded Delaware State, 62-47, in the opening round of the Greensboro Region of the NCAA Women's Tournament.

The Commodores (28-5) will play Tuesday against the winner of the Bowling Green-Oklahoma State contest.

Wirth added six rebounds and six assists in a solid all-around performance. Carla Thomas chipped in 16 points on 7-of-7 from the field.

Despite shooting a dismal 30 percent from the floor in the first half, the Lady Hornets (20-13) trailed just 28-24 at intermission.

In the second half, the Commodores shot a sparkling 72 percent (13-of-18) and pulled away from their upset-minded opponent.

Raquel Collier scored 22 points to lead Delaware State, which was making its first NCAA Tournament appearance in school history.
