Rutgers drubs East Carolina in NCAA first-round game

Mar 19, 2007 - 5:16 AM EAST LANSING, Michigan (Ticker) -- Matee Ajavon scored 20 points and Kia Vaughn added 14 as fourth-seeded Rutgers posted a 77-34 victory over No. 13 East Carolina in the first round of the NCAA Tournament's Greensboro Region.

The Scarlet Knights (23-8) ended East Carolina's 10-game winning streak and advanced to Tuesday's second-round matchup against Michigan State.

Rutgers put together a devastating defensive display, limiting the Lady Pirates to just 16 percent (10-of-61) shooting from the floor and made 18 steals. East Carolina made just three of 30 second-half shots.

The Most Valuable Player of the Big East Conference tournament, Ajavon made 8-of-14 shots and scored 11 of her points in the first half.

Cherie Mills scored 13 points and Nicole Days grabbed 13 rebounds for East Carolina (19-14), which was making its first appearance in the tournament since 1982.
