Connecticut breezes in NCAA opener vs. UMBC
Mar 19, 2007 - 5:38 AM HARTFORD, Connecticut (Ticker) -- Renee Montgomery got Connecticut going in the right direction.Montgomery scored 19 points to lead five players in double figures as the top-seeded Huskies rolled to an 82-33 victory over No. 16 Maryland-Baltimore County in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Charde Houston had 15 point and three steals and Kalana Greene and Ketia Swanier scored 12 apiece for Connecticut, which will meet ninth seed Wisconsin-Green Bay in the Fresno Regional on Tuesday.
The Huskies shot 52 percent (18-of-34) from the floor to jump to a 41-20 edge through the first 20 minutes. They shot 59 percent (34-of-57) overall.
Connecticut (30-3) continued to pull away in the second half, using a commanding 17-2 burst to make it 58-22 at the 13-minute mark.
Brittnie Hughes scored nine points and Amanda Robinson added eight for UMBC (16-17), which shot just 25 percent (13-of-52) and committed 17 turnovers.
