Bowling Green posts historic victory over Vanderbilt

Mar 21, 2007 - 6:31 AM EAST LANSING, Michigan (Ticker) -- Amber Flynn and Bowling Green have racked up a lot of wins this season but none bigger than their latest.

Flynn scored 19 points off the bench and the seventh-seeded Falcons became the first team from the Mid-American Conference to reach the "Sweet 16" with a 59-56 victory over No. 2 Vanderbilt in the second round of the Greensboro Regional.

The Falcons (31-3) have won four straight and 22 of their last 23. They look to continue their run on Saturday when they meet third-seeded Arizona State.

Bowling Green shot 54 percent (19-of-48) in the first half to build a 37-24 lead. Vanderbilt (28-6) pressed its way back to within 52-49 with 1:50 to play.

Ali Mann, who scored 10 points, hit a deep 3-pointer just under a minute later to push the lead back to 55-49. Kate Achter sealed the win by making four free throws in the final 19 seconds.

Liz Sherwood scored 18 points and Carla Thomas added 12 points and 10 rebounds for Vanderbilt, which committed 20 turnovers that led to 20 points for Bowling Green.
