Charlotte name Aston new women's basketball coach
Apr 27, 2007 - 9:21 PM CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- The Charlotte 49ers announced the hiring of Karen Aston as the new women's basketball coach on Friday.Aston, who received her first Division I job, replaces Amanda Butler, who left the 49ers for Florida earlier in the month. She became the seventh coach in the 32-year history of the program.
In its first year in the Atlantic 10, Charlotte (19-13) finished fourth in the league with a 9-5 record. The 49ers also reached the postseason, losing to Virginia in the second round of the WNIT.
Known as one of the best recruiters in college basketball, Aston served as the associate coach at Baylor last season. Prior to that, she was the recruiting coordinator and associate coach for Texas from 1998-2006.
