West Virginia edges Houston in first round

Mar 21, 2011 - 1:48 AM Waco, TX (Sports Network) - Liz Repella poured in 26 points to power the ninth-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers to a 79-73 triumph over the eighth- seeded Houston Cougars in the first round of the NCAA Tournament from Waco.

Madina Ali posted 13 points and 15 rebounds for West Virginia (24-9), which advances to battle top-seeded Baylor in round two.

Brittney Scott racked up 24 points and Courtney Taylor added 17 points in defeat for Houston (26-6), which returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005.

An early 16-1 run enabled West Virginia to lead 37-25 at intermission.

Houston did rip off 10 straight unanswered points in the second half, but the Mountaineers recovered and held on for the narrow win.

Clearly, a 52-36 rebounding advantage played a major role in the victory for WVU.
