No Moore? UConn has plenty for Stanford
Nov 22, 2011 - 3:24 AM Hartford, CT (Sports Network) - Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis scored 19 of her 25 points in the first half, and No. 2 Connecticut dumped No. 3 Stanford, 68-58, in a matchup of perennial title contenders. The last time these programs met was December 30, 2010, when the Cardinal ended the Huskies' NCAA-record 90-game winning streak with a 71-59 victory at Maples Pavilion.
But at the XL Center Monday night, UConn (3-0) prevailed behind a pair of underclassman in Mosqueda-Lewis and Bria Hartley, who netted 19 points. Tiffany Hayes, the only senior on UConn's roster, had a balanced effort of nine points, 13 rebounds and six assists.
Nnemkadi Ogwumike recorded 22 points and eight rebounds for Stanford (3-1), which committed 16 turnovers to UConn's seven.
Mosqueda-Lewis, a six-foot freshman wearing superstar Maya Moore's old No. 23, carried the Huskies to a 32-26 halftime lead on 8-of-11 shooting. Hartley was 4-of-7 in the opening 20 minutes, while the rest of the Huskies were 0-for-17 from the field.
Ogwumike sparked Stanford out of the break, as a 10-2 run gave the Cardinal a 36-34 advantage.
Stefanie Dolson ended the drought of UConn players not named Mosqueda-Lewis or Hartley with a jumper, and Hayes followed with a layup and three-pointer on consecutive possessions for a 41-38 lead.
The Huskies turned a three-point game into a double-digit lead a little later, as Caroline Doty drained a three-pointer to put the finishing touches on a 10-2 run with 7:37 on the clock.
A Ogwumike bucket pulled Stanford within six, 57-51, two minutes later, but Doty answered with another make from behind the arc, and the hosts held on comfortably from there.
