Hawkins leads No. 8 Maryland past Wake Forest
Jan 20, 2012 - 2:28 AM College Park, MD (Sports Network) - Tianna Hawkins recorded her ninth double- double of the year with 18 points and a career-high 24 rebounds to lead 8th-ranked Maryland past Wake Forest, 86-58, on Thursday.Alyssa Thomas filled the stat sheet with 16 points, 11 boards and seven assists to give the Terps (18-1, 5-1 ACC) their second straight win after their lone setback of the season.
Laurin Mincy, Brene Moseley and Lynetta Kizer each contributed 11 points in the win.
Chelsea Douglas paced Wake Forest (11-7, 1-4) with 15 points and five assists. Lakevia Boykin and Sandra Garcia netted 13 points apiece in the Demon Deacons' fourth loss in five games.
The game entered the second half tied at 37, but Maryland opened the frame with seven straight points, including the last five by Hawkins, to take control and it never looked back.
The Terps shot 54.8 percent from the floor through the final 20 minutes while holding Wake Forest to a 9-for-29 performance that included a 1-for-10 mark from beyond the arc as they pulled away for the victory.
