Maryland beats Virginia, moves into ACC semis
Mar 3, 2012 - 4:26 AM Greensboro, NC (Sports Network) - Alyssa Thomas scored 18 points and pulled down five rebounds as No. 6 Maryland cruised to a 70-58 victory over Virginia in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament at Greensboro Coliseum on Friday.Brene Moseley added 13 points and Anjale Barrett, Lynetta Kizer and Alicia DeVaughn netted seven points apiece for the third-seeded Terps (26-4), who advance to the semifinals where they will face seventh-seeded Wake Forest, which upset Miami-Florida earlier in the day.
Ariana Moorer paced the Virginia (22-10) attack with 19 points and seven rebounds and Lexie Gerson chipped in 16 in a losing effort.
After Virginia tied the game at eight on a Moorer jumper, Maryland reeled off a 14-1 surge to take a 22-9 lead midway through the first half.
Maryland utilized the long ball in the first, connecting on 6-of-7 from three- point range to take a 40-20 edge at the break.
Virginia lost by only 12, but was unable to make it a game in the second, as the lead sat around the 20-point mark for the majority of the half.
