Fighting Irish fend off Hoyas
Jan 16, 2013 - 2:53 AM South Bend, IN (Sports Network) - Kayla McBride scored 17 points and Skylar Diggins added 15 as No.2 Notre Dame dropped Georgetown, 79-64, on Tuesday.McBride shot 5-for-10 from the field, while Diggins also finished with nine assists and six steals for the Fighting Irish (15-1, 4-0 Big East), who feasted at the free throw line, making 35-of-38 from the charity stripe for the game.
Natalie Achonwa totaled a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds and Jewell Loyd chipped in with 14 points in Notre Dame's 10th straight win.
Andrea White and Sugar Rodgers each scored 14 for the Hoyas (10-7, 1-3), who shot just 33.8 percent in dropping their third straight contest. Jasmine Jackson contributed 15 points and five steals off the bench in the setback.
Notre Dame opened up a 15-2 lead early and never looked back. Jackson hit a jumper for the Hoyas to cut their deficit to 22-8 at the 10:26 mark, but the Fighting Irish ran off eight straight points to take a 31-8 lead.
McBride, who tallied 12 points in the first half, scored seven of Notre Dame's final nine points in the period to give it a 44-29 edge going into halftime.
The Fighting Irish then took a 23-point lead following a pair of Madison Cable free throws with 13:41 remaining in the game. Georgetown trailed by double- digits the rest of the way.
