No. 7 Maryland holds off Wake Forest

Feb 9, 2013 - 2:38 AM Winston-Salem, NC (Sports Network) - Tianna Hawkins and Alyssa Thomas scored 23 points apiece as seventh-ranked Maryland defeated Wake Forest, 73-63, on Friday.

Using just six players, Maryland (19-3, 10-1 ACC) earned its ninth straight victory, as it faces Duke, the only team undefeated in conference play, on Monday. Malina Howard, the lone player off the Terrapins bench, scored 12 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting.

Chelsea Douglas had 17 points, while Asia Williams recorded 13 points and eight rebounds for Wake Forest, which has lost five straight.

Wake Forest began the game strong, holding an 11-4 margin with 14:51 left to play in the first half. However, for the rest of the half, the Terrapins capitalized off turnovers and went into the break with a 39-28 advantage.

Early in the second half, Hawkins' two layups started a 9-0 run that extended Maryland's lead to 48-28 with 16:50 left to play.

However, Douglas' two free throws started a 31-14 run for the Demon Deacons over the next 13-plus minutes.

A layup by Dearica Hamby brought Wake Forest to within three, 64-61, with 2:31 remaining, but the Terps ended the contest with a 9-2 run. Thomas recorded seven points and an assist during the swing.
