Ogwumike helps Stanford survive Tulsa
Mar 25, 2013 - 1:32 AM Stanford, CA (Sports Network) - Chiney Ogwumike tallied 29 points and eight rebounds as the top-seeded Stanford Cardinal used a strong second half to blow past the 16th-seeded Tulsa Golden Hurricane, 72-56, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Maples Pavilion.Ogwumike shot 13-of-18 from the field for Stanford (32-2), which extended its win streak to 18 games and will now face off against Michigan in the second round. Amber Orrange added 14 points in the triumph.
For Tulsa (17-17), Taleya Mayberry netted 18 points, Kelsee Grovey had 12 points and Tiffani Couisnard hauled in a game-high nine rebounds.
Stanford came out of the gates flat, shooting less than 39 percent from the field in the first half. Luckily it was able to hold Tulsa to just 32.1 percent field goal shooting, as the teams went into intermission knotted up at 24-24.
The Cardinal gained control of the contest early in the second half thanks to an 16-3 run. They shot 65.5 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes to prevail.
Stanford outscored Tulsa in the paint, 36-18.
