Maryland holds off Georgia Tech
Jan 19, 2014 - 10:47 PM College Park, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Alyssa Thomas scored 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead No. 6 Maryland to a 92-81 victory over Georgia Tech at the Comcast Center.Lexie Brown totaled 15 and Alicia DeVaughn added 13 points and seven boards for Maryland (16-1, 4-0 ACC), which has won 14 straight since its only loss of the season against UConn on Nov. 15. Shatori Walker-Kimbrough and Tierney Pfirman contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively, in the victory.
Kaela Davis poured in a game-high 27 and Tyaunna Marshall finished with 22 points and 14 rebounds for the Yellow Jackets (12-6, 2-3), who have lost three of their last five. Nariah Taylor added 11 points and six rebounds for the visitors.
Maryland trailed, 44-43, at the half after a back-and-forth first 20 minutes, which witnessed six ties and 11 lead changes. The Terrapins led by as many as seven, with just under nine minutes left in the first, before the Yellow Jackets went on a 9-2 run to knot the game at 31 apiece.
The Terrapins started the second half with an 18-7 tear to go ahead 10 with 14:19 left to play. The Yellow Jackets attempted to chip away at the lead, however, Maryland kept them at bay and did not allow them closer than four points.
The Yellow Jackets were within four with 8:50 left to play but Maryland scored six straight and Georgia Tech did not get closer then seven the rest of the way.
