Virginia upsets No. 6 Maryland
Jan 24, 2014 - 3:03 AM Charlottesville, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Kelsey Wolfe netted 24 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead Virginia to an 86-72 upset over sixth-ranked Maryland on Thursday.Ataira Franklin and Faith Randolph scored 19 apiece for Virginia (10-9, 3-3 ACC), winners of two straight, and Sarah Imovbioh and Lexie Gerson added 12 points apiece.
Alyssa Thomas poured in a game-high 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Maryland (16-2, 4-1), which lost for the first time since Nov. 15 against UConn. Alicia DeVaughn contributed 14 points in the defeat.
Maryland was within 61-58 with 8:36 left to play before Franklin scored the next four points to put Virginia ahead by seven. With three minutes remaining the Cavaliers stretched their lead to double-digits and sailed to the finish.
There were nine lead changes and three ties in the first half. Maryland led 38-34 at halftime on the strength of 51.9 percent shooting from the field, compared to 42.9 percent shooting by the Cavaliers.
